In 2015, the Peugeot RCZ was retired without a successor. The RCZ Vision concept car, which offers a glimpse into where the brand’s performance cars are headed, retains its classic coupe identity while no longer featuring a combustion engine in the engine bay. The RCZ, which was loved but not very popular, was expected to remain a footnote in the history of this coupé. Now, however, the name has made a surprising comeback in the form of the RCZ Vision concept car. Peugeot’s electric coupé is based on the new ‘STLA One’ architecture introduced by Stellantis earlier this year. Like the original car, it has a double-bubble roof, but the windows on the car extend from the top of the hood to the rear of the car, in a typically showy interpretation. The interior of the concept car is probably the most relevant part for future production vehicles. Instead of a steering wheel, it features a rectangular control device with thumb grips, called Hypersquare. In vehicles with such a device, the steering does not work with the traditional steering mechanism; therefore, the RCZ Vision has a steer-by-wire (electronic steering) system. The variable ratio system is said to require less than a full turn to achieve full lock at low speeds, and the ratio decreases at high speeds. Peugeot also claims that the technology filters out unwanted vibrations caused by imperfections on the road surface, providing noticeable driving comfort in all conditions.
Unlike the production RCZ, the model with its small rear seats offers much more generous space for rear passengers than the RCZ Vision. The rear bench can accommodate two adults or can be folded flat for more luggage space. There is no bet that the new RCZ will go into production. Instead, the focus seems to be on a broader Peugeot performance vehicle preview, which is expected to be featured in the next E-208 GTI. Peugeot CEO Alain Favey said: “With the Peugeot RCZ Vision, we are presenting our vision, which is firmly focused on the future, with a vehicle that is dedicated to delivering the highest level of driving pleasure.” “This manifesto, at the heart of the senses, reflects Peugeot’s courage and demonstrates that design and technology can work together seamlessly to create an instinctive, elegant and intense experience.”
